With some of the online places like whiteflash, goodoldgold, bluenile, and jamesallen, not only can you find rings comparable to the mall store prices and sizes, but the cuts and clarities will blow the mall stores out of the water.Cut is the most important “C” to create sparkle, and that is often the most neglected “C” at places like that. Clarity too! I1 I2 and I3 will make a diamond cloudy or it will have black chunks in it. The special lighting is deceiving. In some cases, the online stores can be cheaper and will always be better quality.

3k is quite alot of money for a ring. You could definitely get a VERY nice ring with that kind of money! I got a beautiful 1/2 carat diamond ring with 5 sidestones on each side for $1200. That also included the wedding band!
We bought it at JCPenney. An independent place might be little more expensive, but maybe not.

My cost $152.37 at Walmart. $3,000 is a rock to me.

That is a decent budget, yes. You will be able to get a good quality stone and setting for your money. You are much better off at a private importer or private jeweler than a chain store, for sure. The customer service and quality are far superior at smaller places. Go to a few local places or ask your friends and family for recommendations. Private jewelers will be able to show you great gems and will provide all necessary certifications. You can establish a lifelong relationship with them that can come in handy down the road ; )

$3,000 for an engagement ring is a good budget.

I would definitely not recommend mall stores, as I don’t consider them good values and I often question the quality of their products and stones. I would never buy a piece of jewelry from Zales or most other mall stores. Jared and Kay do have a slim selection of nice ideal cut stones, but you will pay through the nose for them.

Spend as much time as possible getting educated about diamonds and metals before you go shopping. If I were you, I’d either seek out a reputable independent jeweler who sells GIA and AGS certified stones or look to the internet. You won’t have to worry about tax with most internet vendors

Edit: Please take a look at the links people have provided you for complete rings from mall stores. Notice that the clarity of the stones is I1 or sometimes I2-I3. THAT IS TERRIBLE and really representative of the poor quality you find at mall stores. The stones aren’t certified and who knows what the quality of cut really is. Those rings will not sparkle in real life settings.
